Explaining Door Handing and Hinging

Door handings seem simple when you first think about them.  Which side is the knob on, right?  Well, it gets more complicated as you take in the other variables.  Which side of the door are you standing?  If it is an exterior door, is it an inswing or outswing door?  Are you pulling the door toward you as you open it or pushing it open?

The standard way to call a door is by opening the door fully open, and putting yourself inside the door, with one foot on each side of the door. Put your back to the hinges and you are facing the latch on the door.  Now tell me, does the door swing to the right or to the left when it opens?  That works for nearly every application, but there are exceptions!  Storm doors are called by looking at the door from the outside and naming if the hinges are on the right or to the left.

Below is an image for helping you visualize your door swings.  This image should not be applied to storm doors.
