A HAND UP:

Christmastime; that special time of year when you get together and celebrate with friends, family and even people you spend eight or more hours with nearly every day of the week, your co-workers.  Each year the task of buying the gift(s) for your manager(s) usually falls on the person drawing the short straw.  It is a daunting task to think of something for your manager.  Not too personal, but useful and hopefully appreciated.  The past few years our managers have turned our gifts of appreciation into charity donations.  This year “The Heartland House” was chosen to be the donations recipient.

Yard Manager, Mark Kozel, said, “There are so many worthy organizations in our community but it is not possible to help them all.  Therefore when we see opportunities for giving that are close to the hearts of our employees and customers it is just natural to embrace those needs with our resources.”

The Heartland House in Sioux Falls won our hearts with their “Hand-Up” solutions offered to our community.  Heartland House in Sioux Falls takes up to 35 families at a time and helps them achieve self sufficiency through “intensive case management”.  Heartland assists these families with transitional housing, finding employment, education, medical and other needs while the family works on their “self sufficiency plan” to join the community again.

Scott’s employees donated $ 303.00 plus some people donated actual products instead of cash.  Susan, Bookkeeper for our store, used the gifts of cash to buy kitchen and bathroom items and then took everything to the Minnehaha County Director at the Heartland House office in Sioux Falls.  We are proud to be a “Helping Hand” in the community

Thanks to Pete Diercks, Patricia Jansons, Steve Schutz, Susan Kiger, Rob Meier and Brian Noble for posing for “A Hand Up” picture shown here!

Duane Mlsna Heads New Dairy Barn Construction At The Sioux Empire Fair

Duane with some of the crewDuane Mlsna heads the effort again this year to help upgrade some of the Sioux Empire Fair farm buildings.  This year they are building a new barn right next to last years project.  This one is called "The North Dairy Barn".  Duane has been instrumental in finding the funding as well as the donated labor for this project.  Scott's Lumber has joined other Vendors in donating materials to this cause.  Some of Scott's employees have also joined contractors and farm families in donating their labor for this worthy cause.  Thanks again Duane for all of your hard work!  We are all proud of you!!

Aaron and Kelly go to "Jail" for the MDA's Annual "Lock-Up".

We love to have fun while we work.  Thanks Aaron and Kelly for being great sports for the MDA's 2010 "Lock-Up" on February 4th.  Maybe next year we will donate to keep you in there than to get you out!

Scott's has deep roots in our community and we are proud to see our staff participating in events like these that show they care.

Hat's off (and cuffs) to Aaron and Kelly!

Donation to the Sioux Empire Fair

Cotton candy, Ferris wheels, spinning rides, Hot dogs and funnel cakes.  That is what comes to most people’s minds when you mention the “Sioux Empire Fair”.  But lest we forget, just think about how the contributions and deep heritage of our farming community has enriched our fair-going experiences every year.  The fair just wouldn’t be the same without their presence.  That is why when the farmers asked for help to restore the 70 year old dairy barn, Scott’s Lumber was happy to join in donating materials to help restore this piece of history.  Our own Salesperson, Duane Mlsna, became the main contact for sourcing material for the project.  High Plains Builders and Wehede Brothers Construction donated their labor alongside the farmers and even their kids to bring new life to the much needed face lift.  Duane donated much of his own personal time to make sure the project was completed in time for this year’s fair.

Scott’s Lumber is proud to be part of this restoration and very proud of our Salesperson, Duane, for his participation.

Riding 150 Miles to Make a Difference!

For the third year in a row our resident IT guy, Randy Hoiland, pedaled 150 miles in two days raising donations for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.  The "MS-150" event this year was August 1st and 2nd.  "Scott's Lumber and Lampert Yards are my largest single supporter with their donations.  I also appreciate the support I receive from my coworkers with their donations and encouragement.   The MS Society is making a difference for people with MS.  With my supporters, I am proud to be part of the reason they can."
